Installing Application Xtender Components

Summary

This KA will walk you through the process of downloading/installing Application Xtender components for BDM.

Body

The new version of BDM only requires component installation if the user would like to scan from a scanner directly into BDM.

No component is needed for viewing existing documents.

No component is needed to upload a document already loaded on their computer.

To connect a scanner:

  • Before using a scanner for the first time with the new BDM, you will need to go to Software Center

  • Type captiva in the search box to find the Captiva Cloud Runtime by Open Text. This component allows your browser to communicate with your scanner. Click on the Cloud  Icon.
  • Then click Install.
  • The process does not give any installation complete pop up, but when you see the screen below restart your computer.
  • Open BDM in your browser: https://bdm-dev.shsu.edu/AppXtender/DataSources/BANDEVL/?sso=true
  • Choose a folder to the left and left-click on it
  • Select New Document
  • Click the scanner icon indicated by the red arrow
  • Check the “Don’t show this dialog again” box and then click Allow. This will tell your browser that it is acceptable for this program to access your scanner. It will do a brief review of the scanner drivers installed on your workstation.Uploaded Image (Thumbnail)
  • You will see a Scanner Selection box as below, but with all your connected scanners listed (the workstation being used for these screenshots has no scanners attached). Click the scanner you would like to use and click OK.
  • You can click on the down arrow next to this scanner icon to get to scanner specific settings.

You can change the Color Format, Scan Mode, Paper Size, and Resolution with the embedded dropdowns, or you can click the Gear icon (show with the Red arrow) to open your specific scanner’s options panel.
  • Every Scanner is different, so we cannot provide screenshots of what it will look like past this point. To optimize scan speed and document size, we advise that you use Greyscale or Black And White for color, and resolution of 150 DPI until you find it insufficient for the documents you are scanning. Higher color palettes or DPI (Dots per Inch) will make your scanner scan pages slower and increase the size of the documents being sent into BDM (which can slow down how quick it is to view them in the future).
