Pixar RenderMan and Tractor License Renewals

This article documents the annual renewal process for the SHSU Pixar RenderMan educational license. It explains how to retrieve renewal information from the Pixar licensing email, verify the license server assignment, and use the RenderMan LicenseApp to obtain and apply the updated license file on the RenderMan license server.

Overview

This article explains how to renew the SHSU Pixar RenderMan educational license and retrieve the updated license file provided through Pixar's annual education license donation program.

Instructions

Part 1 — Retrieve Renewal Information from Email

1. Log in to the software@shsu.edu mailbox.
2. Locate the renewal email from license-admin@pixar.com. This email is sent annually in May as part of Pixar's education license donation program.
3. Note the following details from the email:
   • Serial number
   • License server hostname the license is attached to
   • New expiration date
4. Confirm the license server hostname in the email matches the SHSU RenderMan license server. If it does not match, do not proceed. Contact Pixar to clarify before continuing.

Part 2 — Retrieve the New License File

5. Log in to the RenderMan license server.
6. Navigate to the RenderMan installation bin directory and launch the LicenseApp. Example path: [RENDERMAN_INSTALL_DIR]/bin/LicenseApp
7. The LicenseApp will detect the existing license. Follow the on-screen prompts to reconnect to Pixar and retrieve the renewed license file.
   • Note: Keep the LicenseApp running while completing any browser-based steps it launches. Closing LicenseApp before the process completes will require starting over.
8. Once the LicenseApp confirms the license has been updated, restart the service on the license server.
