Printers - Identifying the Different Printer Type

University Printers
1.Network Printers
1.  physically connected with an Ethernet cable from printer to the wall
2.  Multiple users from a department can print to it or students in a lab are automatically mapped to the printer in the lab.
2.Local Printers
1.not setup on a server
2.physically connected to a computer (host) with USB cable
3.Wireless Printers
1.We do not support wireless printers but we do allow wireless printing.
Shared Printers
1.We DO NOT support desktop printers that are shared between two computers due to issues managing the device and connecting to the printer.
1.When users share out the printer they often leave the default name of the printer model as is. This caused multiple printers to appear with the same default printer model name (EX: HP Color Laserjet Pro M255) and made troubleshooting/connecting to the printer difficult.
2.Connecting to the shared printer relies on the main user computer being on and depending on the printer model the user who shares out the printer also needs to be logged in.
Personal Printers
1.We DO NOT support personal printers, we only support SHSU printers.
1.Client's should not be bringing their own personally bought printers to their offices as their department should supply them with supported desktop printers. Supported desktop printers can be bought through Bearkat Buy.
2.We can assist with connecting SHSU laptops to personal printers if the client is at home and getting the printer's driver installed, but we do not work on hardware related issues such as the printer not printing wireless or streaks in the printed pages.
